Mom-entous (Mother’s Day in Review)

May 12, 2014 By Bekah

I won’t make a habit of this, but this particular weekend deserves to be documented.

As Sunday marked the first Mother’s Day I got to celebrate as a mom, my husband was very careful to make this particular weekend “mom-entous.”

Let me first celebrate my little boy on consistently sleeping through the night (8-8 or 8-5) for about two weeks now.  Go B, go!!! Sleep is truly life-changing.  I feel like a new human being after two months of feeling like I was running on empty.  That made this particular mother’s day extra special.

This weekend began on Thursday morning when I got an e-mail asking if I had sold my Beetle yet…the e-mail I had been waiting on for two months.

He asked if I could go to get a pre-buyers inspection on Friday morning, which I gladly agreed to.  So, B and I took a little joy ride in the beetle.  Thankfully, I haven’t had to ride with him in the small hatchback before then…the struggle of getting an infant car seat in and out of a bug is real.

The bug checked out pretty well.  I was relieved and got an offer that both the buyer and I were very comfortable with.  What had become the first car I purchased with my own money was now going to a new family.

I made my way to CCHS to drop off a present for my long term substitute (who is ironically expecting her own son in July).  After seeing one of my favorite groups of students and wreaking havoc in the hallways with my rockstar son, Bennett and I headed to the annual exceptional ed pic-nic.  This was particularly sentimental for me because I was so incredibly honored to introduce my son to two of my favorite gals: Sarai and Layly.  Both of these girls unfortunately aged out of school this year and are onto the working world.  Both of them are so very special to me and I hope that my son possesses even a fraction of the joy that these two have.

Bennett and I were going to go to the spring game, but both of us were EXHAUSTED after a long day and went right to sleep after dinner.

Saturday morning was a big morning for us too as we headed to Chamblee’s annual Cox Trot, our first race together.  I found out quickly that a mom running with her stroller is great motivation for everyone else as I heard whispers of, “that lady with a baby is catching up to us!!” Slow and steady, although I took out the “5k” in a 9:22…which is my fastest mile with the stroller yet!  We had so much fun seeing my co-workers (friends) and students.
Right after we finished!

After the race, we headed back home and Steven went around town running errands and trying to surprise me for Sunday.  We got ready to go to a dear friend’s birthday party and we got to meet up with my very best friend in the world and her husband and they got to meet Bennett for the first time.  This is something I have thought about, talked about, and dreamed about since we were 9 years old!

Steven and I laugh about what constitutes a great night out now…we made it until 7:45 before we had to go home to put the little man to bed (not to mention he needed to be toweled off after his first public puking…oye vey).  Still, the night was so rich with wonderful friends.

Sunday morning, I woke up about 6:30 and had coffee and quiet time and reflected on what it is to be a mother, and how incredibly blessed I am to carry that title.  I thought about my mother and Steven’s mother and I thought about how much we love both of them.  My mom is one of the most important people in my life, and so is my mother-in-law.  I’m really not sure what I would do without either one of them.  I think about that and the true gift I have in carrying that title for Bennett.  I thought about how the real gift is that I get to model what unrelenting, unconditional love looks like for my son.  There is nothing more awesome than that.

Still, it is nice to get pampered for the day!
In addition to the two dozen roses that Steven got for me, he also got me two cards: one from Bennett and one from him.  Both were so incredibly thoughtful and I am the type to keep them forever.  I also got my aquamarine eternity band (special thanks to Bennett for holding off until March 1 so that I could get the light blue stone).

We went to church and then to brunch at The Flying Biscuit (yum).  After, we went home and Steven gave me two hours to do whatever I wanted…I chose to go get my nails done (my happy place).  It was so nice and relaxing.  Then came the hour that I had to say goodbye to my beetle.  It was fitting that we sold the bug on Mother’s Day…a symbolic release of everything that I own that reminds me of coming and going as I please without a thought of anyone else.  The bug was a great car, as was my life before Bennett, but my new car and my new life bring so much more joy than I ever thought possible.
Bye bye buggie! You were a great car!

After the sale, we went to There in Brookhaven which I highly recommend for a celebratory beer.  We listened to the brunch jazz band and enjoyed the afternoon with the little guy.  Even though B celebrated by…ehem…pooping all over my dress…I was so deliriously happy to have him with us!  I am so thankful for this little guy who made me a mommy!
